Return of intramurals By Delilah RamosBridge contributing writerPublished Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021 When the preface “Return of” appears, some can only finish it with “the Jedi” or “the King” but some TAMIU students answer “intramurals.” Back in September, the program relaunched after a yearlong break due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Rec Sports intramural specialist Xcaret Ramirez said she’s happy for this comeback. “Witnessing the energy created by active people enjoying their sports, the ref whistles reverberating off the walls and seeing months of planning coming through fruition has been very rewarding,” Ramirez said. TAMIU baseball program reflects on new coach By Kenya GarciaBridge contributing writerPublished Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021 Lots of changes happened in TAMIU athletics during the novel coronavirus pandemic; for baseball, it involved the hiring of the program’s fifth coach. Texas A&M International University hired coach Phillip Middleton last semester to lead the team at Jorge Haynes Field. As Middleton entered the program, he brought with him a great amount of coaching experience from NCAA Divisions I, II and III. Middleton’s experience includes developing and working with players of the year, conference honorees and many successful programs. Her focus always remained in growing as a teacher, coach and director. Barrera started her teaching career at Christen Middle School in 1981 as a physical education teacher and coach. “I got the opportunity to work with a great staff my first year that welcomed me to the program and helped me grow as an educator and a person,” Barrera said. Coach Nate Vogel has been adamant in playing tough competition year in and year out.
