Student staff of The Bridge receives honors
During its end-of-semester dinner and awards, several members of The Bridge Independent Student Newspaper Fall 2019 staff were honored for their journalistic work on the paper. The event was held Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 11, at Cheddar's restaurant in Laredo, Texas.
In addition, promotions were announced: Current Editor-in-chief Matthew Balderas graduates tomorrow, Dec. 12, and current Staff Writer David Gomez Jr. was promoted tonight to become the new editor-in-chief. Current Staff Writer Erick Barrientos was also promoted to the rank of Managing Editor. While both are fairly new to college journalism, they have stepped up to the plate and worked well as a team. Language professors bring a world of knowledge to students
For some students, learning a foreign language can be an exciting endeavor and an opportunity to broaden their knowledge of other cultures. For others, it can be a daunting task filled with anxiety and frustration.
The language faculty at Texas A&M International University includes several dedicated and patient instructors, including Julien and Melody Carrière, assistant professors of French and Italian.

Bringing it back: Local band releases vinyl record
Like many yesteryear items, vinyl records are gradually making their comeback and gaining popularity with millennials. In many local record stores, such as 2nd & Charles, shoppers can find contemporary music in vinyl record form.

Student creates modern beauty with a vintage touch
On a warm Saturday afternoon in Laredo, Ruth Castañeda sits at the desk in her dorm room surrounded by a variety of creams, extracts and powders. It is in this makeshift lab that Castañeda creates custom-made foundations, lipsticks, eye pigments, beauty oils and kajal (a type of charcoal-based eyeliner originating in South Asia) by hand.

A Texas-Sized Educational Leap

The Texas Academy of International & STEM studies is perhaps the newest high school in Laredo, it is located inside Cowart Hall at Texas A&M International University, TAMIU, and is part of TAMIU Independent School District, TISD. It was first formed through a legislation authored by Senator Judith Zaffirini around 10 years ago, but planning came to a halt due to a lack of funding.
However, in 2014, the first cohort was inducted into the Academy featuring a total of 42 students. The Academy showed great results as the first graduate class in 2016 attempted 582 student credit hours and completed 567 for a mind-blowing passing percentage of 97.4.
Ms. Cassandra Ramirez was part of the first graduating class.

How “Dr. Crazy” became Dr. Fuentes

To most people, he is known as Dr. Luis Fuentes; but to our family he is either known as Louie or as “The Doctor”. Luis Fuentes is 27 years old and resides in Corpus Christi, Texas where he works at a local hospital. He is currently doing his residency and is looking to graduate within the next two years. I decided to meet up with Fuentes because he has not only been such an inspiration for me, but for the rest of our family.
