NEWS: ‘Dean of deans’ retires in May  By David Gomez Jr.Editor-in-chiefPublished Tuesday, March 28, 2023 TAMIU Regents Professor, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Thomas Reagan Mitchell expects to retire at the end of May. Approaching 73, he says many people begin thinking about retirement at that age. The 50-year veteran of academia nearly didn’t make it after a bout with the novel coronavirus. Rolando Santos | TAMIU Public RelationsVice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Thomas Mitchell poses for a photo on campus in summer of 2020. “It causes you to reassess your life,” Mitchell said about his life-threatening case when contracting SARS-CoV-2 in the summer of 2021. “I ended up in the emergency room,” Mitchell recalled. “Before you know it, I was o...

OPINION: Trans rights are human rights

OPINION: Trans rights are human rights By Elizabeth KennedyBridge IllustratorPublished Thursday, March 23, 2023 During the past few months, dozens of anti-LGBT bills have been proposed in Texas. The focus of multiple bills reduces access to or downright bans trans healthcare and visibility, even including medical procedures for trans adults. NEWS: USTEM aims to lower statistics of first-year dropouts, STEM major switches By Mireilly GonzalezManaging EditorPublished Thursday, March 23, 2023 TAMIU plans to offer a learning opportunity soon for incoming freshmen with a declared STEM major. The USTEM program offers accepted students a stipend of $3,500, along with opportunities to research and network with different people. In the USTEM program, students research their interested topics and work in teams. Students also have an out-of-town trip every year. Program manager Leonela Preciado said these out-of-town trips help students network because they can meet various researchers, scientists and engineers. Preciado added that students also benefit fro...

OPINION: The Bridge wants you, so do I

OPINION: The Bridge wants you, so do I By David Gomez Jr.Editor-in-ChiefPublished Tuesday, March 21, 2023 There is something I should have done a lot sooner, and it starts now. Is there a better way to say, “Hey? Join The Bridge?” Probably not. My opportunity to join the student paper came during Fall 2019 and under the leadership of Matthew Balderas—a legendary, almost mythical, editor-in-chief among veteran staff members. And ever since, I’ve always felt that loose in the shoes I’ve had to fill. David Gomez Jr. But I’m straying away from the point here, and the point I’m trying to make is that students should take advantage of participating in academic organizations. First off, from personal experience, anyone who’d like to be a reporter someday, should just join. Yo...

One of the people who oversees this project is Senior Director of Clery Compliance and Contact Administration Trevor Liddle. “We began the purchasing process actually last spring—a little over a year ago,” Liddle said. “We were able to get the cameras … here in the fall and we began the testing and programming phase, and we rolled them out into general use in January. So we actually have them, right now, stationed and they’re highly visible.” Joy Davis | BridgeOne of the new campus security cameras attached to one of the campus buildings.
