The TAMIU Kinesiology, Wellness and Recreation Center offers a variety of fitness classes, ranging from slow-paced yoga to high-intensity weight training, available to students at no cost.
Among these classes, two pilates courses, hosted by personal trainers Paul Poinsot and Marielise Rodriguez Sosa, integrate the tension-relieving stretches of yoga and the strenuous and fast-paced exercises of cardio. The classes take place at noon and 5:45 p.m., respectively, in Room 230 at the Rec.
While both classes focus on contemporary pilates exercises, Poinsot’s class, having a background as a High-Intensity Training instructor, is fast-paced.
“[It’s focused on] building a good sense of foundation when it comes to muscle, muscle connection and [sculpting] the entire body,” Poinsot said. “It’s a mind and body class having to do with strengthening the core muscles, strengthening the shoulder muscles and lower body muscles while also being able to focus on some mobility and trying to de-stress at the end of the class.”
Kinesiology major Rodriguez, who focuses on anatomy and exercise physiology, emphasizes in her class how to implement exercises supported by science to be beneficial to one’s health. In her class, she offers various exercise variations to accommodate those with physical impediments or chronic conditions.
“I have a really special place in my heart for those with chronic conditions that can limit them physically,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez and Poinsot both display great passion and enthusiasm for their craft, and through their prowess and dedication, they are able to provide fun and engaging pilates classes that will help attendees better their physical and mental conditions for the long term.
