In a 60-56 win, TAMIU’s women’s basketball team defeated Eastern New Mexico University on Jan. 25. The Lone Star Conference rivals faced off in the second game of the Spring 2024 semester.

At the start, Texas A&M International University began to rack up points over ENMU early on. While the offense clicked on all cylinders, the defense held ENMU to a tight spot in the first half.

“We were really just focused on being better defensively,” senior Raiana Brown said. “That was something that we focused on a lot—especially these past couple games. Our mindset was to be us and be real attentive on defense.”

The Dustdevils held off the Greyhounds defensively. Later in the game, many mistakes were made offensively, which kept the score closer.

“We just need to slow down,” Brown said. “We will get what we want, but we cannot allow teams to rush us.”

While TAMIU definitely had a great start, ENMU began to heat up at the right time before the first half, and carried it over through the rest of the game. By the fourth quarter, the rivals were in a tight match; to get the win, one team needed a player to step up to solidify victory.

Brown stepped up to the plate going for 30 points, 8 rebounds and a game icing of free throws to clinch the lead.

“I really do not put too much pressure on it,” Brown said. “I know my team trusts me, and I trust them, so we try to have fun.”

Brown’s performance led to a 60-56 victory for TAMIU’s women’s basketball team.

The season nears its end now with the final game on Feb. 29 at Texas A&M—Kingsville.
