From 10 a.m. to noon Monday, June 28, TAMIU welcomes the incoming class of 2025 Dustdevils to an in-person Dusty Camp. This is the first time for the orientation to be held face-to-face since the onset of the novel coronavirus pandemic in 2020.

“In a further indication of  its commitment to a traditional fall experience, incoming TAMIU [freshmen] will get to experience their first glimpse at campus life during TAMIU’s annual Dusty Camp, offered in-person and on-campus,” according to a press release from Texas A&M International University sent on Sunday.

Held at the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Theater, incoming freshmen begin their exploration of Dustdevils territory.

“Dusty Camp, or New Student Orientation, provides a unique experience helping incoming students transition from high school to University life,” the press release continues. “Throughout the two-day experience, students become familiarized with the campus and can opt to take part in an overnight stay at the Residential Learning Center.

“Dusty Camp helps answer questions first-year students may have about financial aid, housing, academic expectations and student involvement through a series of activities led by orientation leaders. OLs are current University students who are active members of the University community.”

During the pandemic, students attended the event virtually. According to the press release, “an overwhelming number wanted an in-person Dusty Camp.”

Approximately 200 students registered for this year’s camp. Additional sessions are scheduled throughout July and August. An alternate Dusty Camp experience is available to transfer and international students.
