TAMIU’s softball team heads toward the end of another season, fueled by dedication, teamwork and standout performances. Among the roster, two players—third baseman Queenandra Dunn and pitcher Zakayia Fredrick—emerged as key figures, bringing talent, leadership and determination to the Dustdevils.

Texas A&M International University’s softball program works on a reputation of resilience and competitiveness. With a mix of seasoned players and fresh talent, the team strives for a strong end to its season in Lone Star Conference play.

The two standout players emphasized the team’s work ethic and unity.

“This group is focused and determined,” Fredrick said. “We have players who are stepping up in big ways.”

The Dustdevils set their sights on making the playoffs, a goal that fueled their training and performances throughout the season.

They said there are specific approaches used to help the team reach the playoffs and overcome the challenges faced this season. They also said training was adjusted to improve over the previous year and mental preparation differs for the playoffs than the regular season.

Queenandra Dunn–Force on the field

Dunn’s journey to TAMIU softball is one of passion and perseverance. At third base, her work refined her mechanics and increased endurance.

“This year, I’ve focused on strength training and agility to improve my reaction time and durability,” she said. “Last season, I found myself getting fatigued late in games, so I knew I had to work on my stamina and conditioning.”

She also highlighted the importance of communication.

“We’re making sure we execute the small details—situational hitting, base running and defensive alignments,” she said. “Every play matters in the postseason.”

Mentally, she approaches the playoffs with a heightened focus on composure.

“It’s all about staying in the moment and not letting the pressure get to you,” she assessed. “I remind myself to breathe, trust my training and play my game.”

She praised the leadership of her teammate Fredrick.

“She pushes all of us to be better,” she explained. “Her dedication is unmatched and she leads by example.”

Zakayia Fredrick–Heart of the team

Fredrick is known for her leadership and energy.

“Every time I step onto the field, I play for my team,” she said.

She emphasizes a don’t-think-just-do mentality.

“When you overthink, you are not going to do well,” Fredrick said. “Softball is a tough sport already and you don’t need to make it harder on yourself.”

To improve her batting, she works on refining her approach at the plate.

“Last season, I struggled with off-speed pitches, so I’ve been studying pitchers more and working on my timing,” she explained.

Mentally, she prepares by visualizing different game situations.

“Playoffs are about executing under pressure,” she said. “You have to believe in yourself and your team.”

With both players stepping up, their contributions could prove crucial.

“We believe in each other,” Dunn said. “If we stay focused, we can make a real run in the postseason … This team has so much fight. Now it’s time to show what we can do.”
