TAMIU alumnus Rolando Martinez recently received an appointment to oversee the campus mechanical and electrical equipment, the general upkeep of the HVAC.

“When I graduated in 2018, I wanted to take the first opportunity that came along,” Martinez recalled. “My career took me to Dallas, San Antonio and now I’m back home.”

After graduating from the software engineering program at Texas A&M International University, his career evolved over time from engineering at United Parcel Service to providing equipment maintenance for data centers at Jones Lang LaSalle Incorporated. He pursued roles with greater responsibility in monitoring equipment maintenance and repairs in a larger scope at Schneider Electric.

“I’ll start off by learning as much as I can, the way the system is organized, find ways to make incremental improvements over time and chip away the energy usage to improve the efficiency,” Martinez explained his initial plans.

Project Manager Jose Silveti defined Martinez’s work approach as proactive, not letting things slip by and chasing them as they come.

“I was very excited because we’ve had some issues getting people hired for the job because Laredo is such a remote place [in] Texas, and for him to not only be knowledgeable on this, but his expertise also spoke for himself and his familiarity with the school,” Silveti explained.

Silveti outlined Martinez’s adaptability to collaborate in resolving issues his teams encountered in the past, in relation to coming across subcontractors to work for the Schneider Electric team in Laredo.

“Due to the location of Laredo, we’ve struggled with finding subcontractors to work here,” Silveti said. “Because of his past experience of doing something similar, he’s been able to give us names of the companies that are willing to come down to Laredo and work for us.”

Martinez’s familiarity with the University also helped the team consider ways to get more involved with the campus and become better acquainted with students in the future.
