As the semester continues through the COVID-19 pandemic, TAMIU CARES keeps providing students with aid during the Spring 2022 semester. The application deadline occurs Feb. 21.
TAMIU CARES provides Texas A&M International University students impacted by the pandemic with student emergency aid grants. This semester, the program is expected to offer more than $7.5 million in student support funding.
According to the TAMIU CARES website, “These allocations are designed to provide grants to students for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus. The CARES/ARP funds will be used to address financial hardship, including housing and food insecurity, medical expenses and lack of educational support and supplies –including technology.”
Since Spring 2020, TAMIU CARES provides emergency aid grants to students. Students received up to $1,500 under the CARES Act, up to $7,811 under the CRRSA Act and up to $9,320 under the ARP Act.
Senior biology major Amanda Arce said the TAMIU CARES helped her recover some school-related expenses.
“Personally, the CARES Grant has helped me with technology expenses, as I was able to get a laptop during the time that classes had gone completely virtual,” Arce said. “The CARES Grant is really helpful and I feel that it provides a little sense of relief for students–especially with all the hardships people have been going through during this pandemic.”
In addition to TAMIU CARES, other resources help students who may feel the effects of the pandemic this spring. This includes the Loaner Laptop program which assists students who lack computer access at home and Dusty’s Food Pantry for students facing food insecurity. Other University resources, such as Student Health Services and Student Counseling Services, are available to assist as well.
The last day to apply to TAMIU CARES is Feb. 21. Funding is expected to be available the week of March 7, according to the website’s FAQ section.
The University distributes funds on a first-come, first-serve basis. Eligible students may apply via the TAMIU CARES website and access additional information at www.tamiu.edu/cares.
